Seismological structure of Earth’s mantle and core, with implications for thermal and chemical structure

Description

It is proposed (i) to develop and apply a scheme for inversions of the seismic spectra of normal modes, to reliably extract the information contained in such data on the three dimensional distributions of shear and compressional seismic velocities and, importantly, on density; (ii) to expand work on mantle discontinuities, using new data sets, and to seek thermal and compositional explanations for the observed variations in the strengths and their depths. The unifying theme of the research is to bring to bear new kinds of information, and by combining this information with the other data sets used in seismic tomography, to make inferences on the causes and dynamical implications of the seismically determined three dimensional structure.
