The goals of the NGMSO

History

The NGMSO wants to create a connection with all students in the Earth Sciences in the Netherlands and abroad.

The first initiative was made in 1946 by the Board of the Geological Society in Amsterdam. A letter was send to 70 universities world wide to orientate on the possibillity of international co-operation. The main points of co-operation were described as follows:

1.   exchange of information on study opportunities;
2.   exchange of detailled information on excursion trips;
3.   information on exchange projects for students in the Earth Sciences and
4.   improvement of the work of geologists in every country in general.

Clearly there was a need for the Dutch societies to work together in the Netherlands at first in order for this initiative to have a change of succeeding. On January 11, 1946, the Boards of the Geological Societies of Amsterdan, Leiden, Utrecht (which was founded especially for this occasion), the Board of the Mining Engineering Society of Delft and representatives of geology students from Groningen founded the NGMSO on a meeting in Amsterdam. The oldest involved society, the Mijnbouwkundige Vereeniging (Delft) would be the daily board for the remainder of the schoolyear 1945-1946.

The main focus of the NGMSO was in those first year on the national co-operation. Unfortunately, there has been almost none contact with foreign societies. Today we want to correct this and are looking for contact with foreign student societies with affinity for Earth Sciences. Those societies are therefore encouraged to contact the daily board (for contact information see Contact).

For a summary of our activities see Activities.

About the logo

The darkred pentagon represents the five societies. For roman languages the pentagon is placed at the beginning of the sentence. The five societies form the base of the NGMSO. The NGMSO wants those societies to co-operate together smoothly. This is represented by the darkred circle on the righthand side. The objects are arranged that is seems that the pentagon lies underneath the letters and the circle above them.
The letters are set in the font 'Skia' and black. The darkred colour of the pentagon and the circle is the html-colour '#800000'.
The logo was designed by Johan Kool in December 2000.
