Paleomagnetic constraints on the Cenozoic deformation of southeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau

As an important accommodation zone during postcollisional intracontinental deformation between the Indian and Asian plates, the tectonics of southeast Tibetan Plateau have been significantly modified during the Cenozoic. A key issue regarding the deformation in southeast Tibet is whether the Indochina block experienced large-scale clockwise rotation and southeastward extrusion in the Cenozoic. 

In the past few years, my research has focused on this question by paleomagnetism, which mainly involves two aspects.


Using magnetostratigraphy on key sedimentary basins, which are kinematically linked with faults movement, mountains exhumation and river reorganization, I construct a precise chronological framework to understand these processes, especially the history of faults movement. In addition, I use rock magnetism, AMS to understand the lithology and provenance change during basin deposition and their response to mountain exhumation.

Paleomagnetic study on different aged rocks from Indochina Block to constrain the amount of paleolatitude motion and tectonic rotation of Indochina. This enables us to test whether the Indochina Block experienced large-scale southward extrusion during Cenozoic.
