Age model of the Pontocaspian region
during the Plio-Pleistocene
The PRIDE (Drivers of Pontocaspian Biodiversity Rise and Demise) programme is a Marie-Currie Innovative Training Network, taking place from 2015 to 2019. This programme comprises 15 interdisciplinary Early Stage Researchers in geology, climatology and biosciences.

The programme focuses on the Pontocaspian region, is located in Eastern Europe and includes the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. The purpose is to identify environmental drivers of past biodiversity changes in the area in order to evaluate the causes, severity and future prospects of the current biodiversity crisis, which affect the endemic Pontocaspian bivalves and molluscs.

Denizli section in SW Anatolia (Turkey), a key section for Pontocaspian fauna.

Sergei’s project focuses on the construction of an integrated magneto-, bio-, cyclostratigraphic time scale for the Pontocaspian area and Anatolian basins to derive a high-resolution time frame and records of environmental changes. During the Plio-Pleistocene, the region had undergone significant changes, both in terms oftectonic activity and climatic changes. This led to numerous connections between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea as well as to restructuring of landscapes and ecosystems. Connectivities between basins caused variations in water salinity, and as a consequence collapses of one basin paleoecosystem and appearance of other. The project will help to understand the reasons and effects of recent decrease of Pontocaspian fauna.

The main scientific questions are:

·         Origin and age of the oldest Pontocaspian fauna in the Neogene Denizli Basin (SW Anatolia, Turkey)

·         Paleoenvironment and time frame of Akchagyl-Apsheron transition in the marginal parts of the Caspian Basin (Goychay section, Azerbaijan)

·         Detailed sedimentological research of Maeotian deposits in the Buzau area (Romania)

The age models and the subsequent paleoenvironmental reconstructions  provide the necessary background for biologists and paleontologists from the PRIDE project.
