Identification and characterisation of Fe redox boundaries in marine sediments applying advanced technologies to environmental magnetism

Most environmental magnetic analyses involve a comparatively simple set of bulk measurements that are rapid and do not require tedious sample preparation. However, while being very useful for the characterisation of large sample collections, the procedures are not geared to the detection of high-coercivity phases, while the discrimination of iron sulfides and magnetite-like oxides is not straightforward either.

By employing the Quantum Design ‘Magnetic Property Measurement System’ (MPMS-XL-7) instrument that allows magnetic characterisation at high magnetic fields (up to 7 Tesla) and low temperatures (down to 1.8 Kelvin),  new methodologies will be developed that will overcome inadequacies in existing mineral magnetic methodology. In addition, a suite of other techniques (SEM, TEM, EBSD, etc.) will be used
