Dr. M.R. Rampino Mass Extinctions of Life and their effects on Global Biogeochemical Cycles Mass extinctions of life in the geologic past have involved the destruction of up to 90% of species in marine and non-marine environments. The extinction of plants and animals on such a large scale had major effects on the cycling of important elements such as carbon and oxygen through the earth system. This lecture will discuss the causes of mass extinctions, the major geochemical changes that accompanied them, and eventual recovery of the biosphere. follows soon |
