Paleomagnetism and magnetostratigraphy of the marine Jurassic of the Neuquén basin (Argentina)

This project focuses both on constructing the first South American Jurassic 
magnetostratigraphy and on refining the continentís APWP. Presently, it studies the Middle Jurassic, following the earlier work of  Iglesia Llanos in the Lower Jurassic. Almost continuous Jurassic outcrops are found in the Neuquén basin (west central Argentina). Dating is based on Andean ammonite Assemblages/Zones with an age precision of ~1 Myr. 

The Argentine sequence allows the discovery of hiatuses as well as correlation between sections. On a global scale, it allows the refinement of the GPTS as well as a better correlation of Andean and Tethyan ammonite Zones. The geodynamic behaviour of Western Gondwana can be analysed to better understand the geodynamics of Jurassic Pangea. 

In the north of the Neuquen basin, in the Arroyo Malo area, the marine succession of lowermost Jurassic (Hettangian to Sinemurian) age is ~1000 m thick.

In the north of the basin, in the area of Bardas Blancas, the Jurassic is completely represented mainly in marine facies bearing ammonites. In the foreground, the Middle Jurassic is intruded by sills.

In the south of the basin, in the Charahuilla area, the Jurassic succession yields a varied ammonite fauna (upper Lower to Middle Jurassic ?).

In the south of the basin, in the area of the Picun Leufu river, the Jurassic is almost fully represented in continental and marine facies with ammonites.
