Fieldwork in the East Carpathians

After a reconnaissance study in June 2002, it was decided to sample - in august/september 2002 - the sequence along the Putna Valley and Rimnicu Sarat valley.

....

Quite a bit of water in the Putna river ...
As we had seen during the reconnaissance trip, a large part of the sequence shows beautiful cycles. Ideal for the Utrecht cyclomaniacs !

Cycles, and thick ones !
Cyclically (and vertically) bedded sands, silts and clays in Putna valley

Iuliana picked up drilling beautiful cores quickly. Towards younger sediments in Rimnicu Sarat, the material became finer grained and often clayey.

Iuliana drilling under every circumstance ...

Help in the field was provided by Christina Panaiotu (sedimentology), Marius Stoica (paleontology) and his student Liliana, and by Christian Panaiotu. Well ... also Wout Krijgsman and Cor Langereis occasionally did something useful.

Christian is awed by these beautiful wave ripples ...

The cyclicity was not alwyas straightforward, and additional work on sediment properties is required to understand the system.

Yes, there ARE cycles ... but how do they fit Milankovitch ?

Cycles or no cycles in Rimnicu Sarat valley, that is the question  ?

Finally, our eating and sleeping comfort in Jitia de Jos was greatly facilitated by the Roska family. Mr. Roska's tuica must be famous throughout the valley.

Fieldwork has been extended to Milcov valley (East Carpathians)
