Research of Hemmo Abels

Long period astronomical control on Neogene continental and marine successions
The project aims at the determination of the influence of long-period astronomical cycles in eccentricity (2.4-Myr) and obliquity (1.2-Myr cycle) on continental and marine sequences.

Recently, results have been published regarding the coincidence of a 1.2 Myr minimum in obliquity amplitudes together with minima in the 100- and 400-kyr eccentricity cycles and the middle Miocene global cooling (Mi3b). 

This peculiar orbital configuration is similar to that found for the early Oligocene cooling (Oi1), several major coolings in the Oligocene, and the early Miocene cooling (Mi1). The results of our study on Malta have been published in Paleoceanography..
