The birth of the Paratethys Sea
The aims of this project are: a) to understand the causes for Paratethys-wide anoxic environmental conditions that resulted in the oil-producing organic shales of the Maikop Series and b) to resolve the Paratethys birth during the Eocene Oligocene climate Transition (EOT) from greenhouse to icehouse and its relation to environmental change. 
Main goal is to date the onset of anoxic shales (Maikop Formation) in the Talysh Mountains of Azerbaijan by integrating magnetostratigraphic techniques. Correlation to astronomically dated climate records will reveal the individual role of glacio-eustatic and tectonic forcing on this restriction event. In addition, high-resolution (biogeological/geochemical/geophysical) proxy records may be developed to evaluate the exact cause and consequences of this environmental change. 
Based on information acquired during previous studies, we have successfully identified key sections that straddle the Eocene-Oligocene transition (EOT) in Azerbaijan. These sections must be sampled for integrated stratigraphy and multi-proxy studies to date the onset and duration of the anoxic shales of the Maikop Series and to determine the exact forcing mechanisms of these oil-producing rocks. 

Our paleomagnetic results will further help to disentangle the complex deformation history of the Talysh mountains. 

Paleoenvironmental proxy records will allow reconstructing through time the environmental response of sea retreat (aridification, cooling, monsoon intensification, biotic events) to tectonism (collision, exhumation, crustal deformation, basin formation) and to global climatic trends (EOT).

In addition, the results will provide boundary conditions for tectonic modelling of continental collision as well as global circulation modelling of Cenozoic climate.
