Stratigraphical charts for the Quaternary and the Netherlands

Chronostratigraphy is the division of geological time as recorded in rock and unconsolidated sediment. Lithostratigraphy is the division of rock and unconsolidated sediments based on content, composition, facies, origin, provenance, geographical distribution and stratigraphical position. Biostratigraphy is the division of rock and unconsolidated sediments based on fossil content and composition. These different ways of stratigraphical subdividing the total geological record, each have their own formal schemes. This page links and mirrors a selection of stratigraphical charts that are of relevance to the Quaternary of the Netherlands and wider surroundings.

Revised Lithostratigraphy of the Netherlands

  • History: In 2000, the Geological survey of the Netherlands (TNO B&O, formerly TNO-NITG) decided on a thorough revision of their lithostratigrapical schemes. This has lead to abandonment of many older stratigraphical names, removal of chronostratigraphical criteria in the Formation defenitions and the introduction of newly named and defined formations. The new lithostratigraphical scheme replaces schemes by Zagwijn en van Staalduinen (red., 1975) and Van Staalduinen et al. (1979).
