Presentations, Visits and Conference Participations

¨ On the 10th of March, Dr. ir. Michiel T. Kreutzer from the Department of Chemical Engineering in TU Delft gave a presentation on “Multiphase flows in porous media and labs-on-chip: breakup models and wetting”. This presentation took place in the framework of the Environmental Hydrogeology Colloquium Series.

¨ Majid Hassanizadeh has been invited and has accepted to give a keynote lecture on “Continuum description of two-phase flow in porous media; rational thermodynamics approach” in the session about “Continuum description of flows and coupled phenomenain International Conference entitled “Flows and Mechanics in Natural Porous Media from the Pore to the Field Scale” organized by IFP Energies Nouvelles. Here you may find the tentative program. For more information on the conference, please refer to the previous Newsletter issue.

¨ Majid Hassanizadeh has been invited and accepted to give a keynote lecture in the Fluid Dynamics in Porous Media Workshop. For more information on the workshop, please refer to the section on Workshops, Lectures and Conferences below.

¨ Reza Sadeghi gave a presentation entitled “Study of an applied model  for  virus transport in the  groundwater" by R. Sadeghi, S. Majid Hassanizadeh, Jack Schijven and Thilo Behrends at the  “Iranian Water Conference on Clean Water”  that  took place from the 2nd until the 3rd of March, 2011, in TehranIran. His presentation  was selected as the top presentation of the conference and he received an award certificate from the conference organizers.

¨ Majid Hassanizadeh, Muhammad Imran, Shuai Li, Qiulan Zhang, Mojtaba Mahmoodlu, Wouter van Leeuwen, Ali Sadraddini, Ehsan Nikooee and Nikos K. Karadimitriou participated in the NUPUS meeting that took place from the 13th until the 16th of March in Freudenstadt, Germany. Qiulan gave an oral presentation on “Colloid Transport Under Transient Conditions in Unsaturated Porous Media”.

¨ Majid Hassanizadeh, Vahid Joekar Niasar, Muhammad Imran, Shuai Li, Qiulan Zhang, Ehsan Nikooee and Nikos K. Karadimitriou will participate in the 3rd InterPore Conference that will take place from the 29th until the 31st of March in Bordeaux, France. For more information on the conference please click here.

¨ Qiulan Zhang, Pieter J. Kleingeld and Nikolaos K. Karadimitriou will visit Prof. Christoph Cremer and his laboratory of Applied Optics and Information Processing in the University of Heidelberg. The purpose of this visit is to perform some preliminary experiments of fluorescent microscopy on colloid mobilization in porous media with the prospect of a possible collaboration between our group and Prof. Cremer’s group.

¨ The Executive Board of Utrecht University has approved the application of N. Seetha’s from Indian Institute of Science, Banglore, India, for a Short Stay Fellowship 2011. This is Fellowship of 5,000 for PhD candidates from an Utrecht University Partner and covers costs (e.g. ticket, health and liability insurance, accommodation) for a period of three months.

¨ Dr. Steffen Berg, who is a researcher in Shell International Exploration and Production BV in the Netherlands, will visit our group on the 4th of April. Dr. Berg is interested in getting informed on the two-phase flow experiments with the use of micro-models that take place in our lab. Our experimental setup along with some preliminary results will be presented to him and his colleagues.
