Outline of the Master’s programme in Hydrology
                                                                                                                                         MSc Projects abroad
The two-year Master’s programme in Hydrology offers a choice of two MSc-tracks:
Earth Surface Hydrology and Environmental Hydrogeology.
It comprises one year of course modules, half a year of independent
research and half a year of a Master’s traineeship. Most course modules are worth 7.5 European credit points
(in the European Credit Transfer System, ECTS). The total program is equivalent to 120 European credit
points.
A large part of the Master’s courses consists of projects designed to stimulate active participation
by students and teachers. The students will be expected to take oral and written exams, write papers
and give presentations. More information about the Hydrology Program can be found in our
folder or on
the hydrology website.
The hydrological subjects and courses are listed below. For a description of the courses, click
here.
Students should choose at least 5 out of the
8 first year course modules listed below.
First year
-
Principles of Groundwater Flow
-
Land Surface Hydrology
-
Hydrogeological Transport Phenomena
-
Unsaturated Zone Hydrology
-
Stochastic Hydrology
-
Environmental Hydrogeology
-
Reactive Transport
-
Hydrology & Climate
In addition to these, students may choose from among a variety of courses offered by the Department of
Earth Sciences and Department of Physical Geography. For the Environmental Hydrogeology Track,
some examples are:
-
Environmental Geochemistry
-
Computational Geophysics
-
Dynamics of basins and orogens
-
Sedimentary processes and products: field observations and modelling
-
Soil remediation
Courses, projects and internships in business/management or education/communication can also be integrated into the programme.
Second year
A number of advanced lecture series will be given (in collaboration with experts from other universities
or industry) on subjects relevant to the research topics of M.Sc. students. For the Environmental Hydrogeology
Track, subjects will include:
-
Colloid and virus transport in porous media
-
Soil and groundwater remediation methods
-
Multiphase flow in heterogeneous media
-
LNAPL and DNAPL in the subsurface
-
Mass and energy storage in the subsurface
-
Upscaling flow and transport processes
-
Coupled flow and transport modelling
In addition to specialize courses, the students will work on their MSc Thesis
(30 European credit points) and will follow a Traineeship (30 European credit points)
with a research institute or a consulting company in the Netherlands or abroad.
