Evolution of the Miocene gateway through Morocco and consequences for Mediterranean climate and environment during the Tortonian and Messinian salinity crises 
We aim at the quantitative understanding of the stratigraphic and paleogeographic evolution of the Moroccan gateway basins and their implications on oceanographic and climatic as well as tectonic events in the Mediterranean, in particular during the late Miocene. More specifically, this project will focus on the reconstruction of the evolution of the sedimentary basins associated with the Atlas and Rif orogeny, by integrating structural field data, seismic sections and integrated stratigraphy results.
Within the framework of the ISES program Europe-Africa Convergence, the project forms part of the multi-disciplinary programme TOPWESTMED, which aims at the quantitative understanding of movements and deformations in the westernmost Mediterranean and their implications on oceanographic and climatic events in the Mediterranean from the Miocene to Present. 

In addition, the Mediterranean response during the Tortonian and Messinian salinity crises will be studied in three continuous, cyclically-bedded, hemipelagic sequences, which are perfectly suitable to evaluate cause and consequence relationships between the closure of the Mediterranean-Atlantic gateway and the registration of orbital forcing of circum-Mediterranean climate. 
The proposed research will thus concentrate on two main aspects: 

  • a multi-proxy analysis (planktonic and benthic foraminiferal d18O and d13C, and redox sensitive elements) in the central Mediterranean sequences, 
  • sampling of late Miocene sequences in the Moroccan gateway and establishing a detailed paleogeographic framework for the Rifian foredeep basin
