Opening
and closure of the Tethys oceans: Mesozoic Cimmerian deformation around
the present-day Black Sea
The geodynamic evolution
of the areas surrounding the Black Sea -i.e. the North Dobrogea Orogen,
Crimea, the Greater Caucasus and the Turkish Pontides, Anatolides and Taurides-
is rather controversial. Geological data from tectonic records in those
areas allow widely differing scenarios about the Mesozoic geodynamic evolution.
From paleomagnetic data in the Global Paleomagnetic Database (GPMDB), if
available, we are unable to distinguish between those contrasting scenarios.

| Therefore,
new paleomagnetic data from sedimentary and volcanic Mesozoic sections
in those areas are a crucial prerequisite to propose a sustainable geodynamic
model, and will be obtained through this study. To enable correction for
the well-known inclination error in sediments, we intend to use a new approach
through the statistical model TK03.GAD of Tauxe and Kent (2004). This model
requires large datasets, that we are able to provide because of a new,
automated measuring system that is available. To obtain better age constraints
on sampled sections, Ar40/Ar39 radiometric dating
will be carried out where needed. |
