The resulting time frame will be applied in tectonostratigraphic studies to unravel the kinematic and paleogeographic evolution of the Transylvanian basin and Romanian Carpathians. 
Ancient (paleomagnetic) rotations will be compared with present-day rotations derived from inversion of GPS data. 

Moreover, the outcome will allow a detailed comparison with time-equivalent marine sequences of the Mediterranean realm, necessary to study the water exchange between the Paratethys and Mediterranean areas. This will provide important boundary constraints on the Pan-Mediterranean geodynamic history as well as on the results of ongoing modelling studies of Neogene depositional environments in the Mediterranean basin.

Fieldwork in the East Carpathians ...
After a reconnaissance study in June 2002, it was decided to sample - in August/September 2002 - the sequences along the Putna Valley and Rimnicu Sarat Valley. Have a look at Iuliana's fieldwork in this fieldwork impression.

Meanhwile, the fieldwork areas have been extended to include a, increasingly larger part of the Paratethys domain: Transylvanian Basin, Croatia, Crimea (Ukrain) and northern Caucasus (Russia). Extension also pertains to the scientific approach, e.g. environmental magnetism in relation to the paleogeography of the eastern Carpathians, tectonic rotations in the Carpathian domain, etc.
