Separation of magnetic anisotropy components
of different magnetic mineral types. 

Measurements of the low-field anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility reflect mainly the magnetic fabric of the ferromagnetic minerals because their magnetization is higher. In many natural rocks, however, the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) is in part determined - and sometimes even dominated - by the paramagnetic minerals that form the rock-matrix.  Therefore, a proper interpretation of the magnetic fabric requires the separation of the magnetic subfabrics, because the minerals could have been formed in different periods of the rock history, or they might have undergone different deformation paths. 
 
In particular, I am interested in the separation of magnetic fabrics in samples rich in hematite and pyrrhotite. These two minerals have a crystalline anisotropy that forces the magnetisation to lie in the basal plane. Since the magnetisation is constrained within this basal plane, the study of the natural remanent magnetisation (NRM) carried by these two minerals can be affected by anisotropy and deflected from the original paleomagnetic direction.

I am also interested in numerical modelling of the AMS for a complete interpretation of the deformation events recorded by the rocks. A proper simulation of the measured AMS can be used for interpretation of strain-AMS correlation in the absence of strain markers.
