Magnetostratigraphy & Cyclostratigraphy

A long-standing and continuous research project involves dating through magnetic stratigraphy and the construction of astronomical polarity time scales (APTS), together with the Stratigraphy and Paleontology group.

Uplift rate of the Tibetan plateau and its relation to global climate change The VIDI project of Guillaume Dupont-Nivet is on the uplift of the Tibetan plateau and climate change. Wholesale plateau uplift triggers the onset of Asian monsoons, and thus generates a major change in global climate. There is growing evidence from paleoclimatic and geologic indicators that argue for initiation of Tibetan uplift and progressive northeastward plateau propagation older currently accepted. Archean paleointensities  & PSV A strong collaboration exists with Andy Biggin on the full geomagnetic vector of the Earth's geodynamo. It focusses on paleointensities, and in particular on the different methods and the most efficient way to obtain a reliable estimate of the ancient field intensity. Andy Biggin is now at Liverpool University, holding a NERC research fellowship.  The MSc project of Anja Dijkhuizen studies the Barberton Scientific Drilling Project, a core drillend into ~3.5 Ga old rocks from the Barberton, South Africa. Archeomagnetism in Turkey In 2007, Pinar Ertepinar started a new project on turkish archeomagnetism, with an emphasis on the Bronze Age.  For Turkey, archeomagnetic results still are largely'terra incognita', and her research will focus on the full vector of the field. She is co-supervised by Andy Biggin

Secular variation of the Kiaman Superchron in Permian red beds and volcanics  Permian red beds show variations in NRM that are very similar to present-day secular variation patterns.  To prove this, we needed precise time control which is not straightforward in red beds (no fossils) deposited during the Permian Kiaman Superchron.  Current research on secular variation during the Permian superchron is the subject of a PhD project by Marcela Haldan. She studies not only red beds, but also volcanic sequences, like those in the Oslo Graben.
