| Based
on information acquired during previous studies, we have successfully identified
key sections that straddle the Eocene-Oligocene transition (EOT) in Azerbaijan.
These sections must be sampled for integrated stratigraphy and multi-proxy
studies to date the onset and duration of the anoxic shales of the Maikop
Series and to determine the exact forcing mechanisms of these oil-producing
rocks.
Our paleomagnetic results
will further help to disentangle the complex deformation history of the
Talysh mountains.
Paleoenvironmental proxy
records will allow reconstructing through time the environmental response
of sea retreat (aridification, cooling, monsoon intensification, biotic
events) to tectonism (collision, exhumation, crustal deformation, basin
formation) and to global climatic trends (EOT).
In addition, the results
will provide boundary conditions for tectonic modelling of continental
collision as well as global circulation modelling of Cenozoic climate. |
