Current research topics
Late Quaternary variability in Oxygen Minimum zone (OMZ) intensity in the northern Arabian Sea
The northern Arabian Sea is one of the few open ocean regions were oxygen is severely depleted below the mixed layer. A distinct Oxygen Minimum Zone between 200 and 1200 m has a pronounced effect on sedimentation. We used a multi proxy approach to reconstruct past variations in OMZ intensity over the past 225,000 years. Although changes in OMZ intensity are now reasonably understood on the Milankovitch time scale, further study is needed to quantify the climatic processes responsible.
Quantification of the role of the winter monsoon
We used a combination of organic geochemistry (Uk37) and inorganic geochemistry (oxygen isotopes) to reconstruct past variability in sea surface temperatures (SSTís) and sea surface salinities (SSSís). This combination of different techniques enabled us to separate the influence of temperature from salinity on the oxygen isotopes of planktonic foraminifera. Past salinity and temperature were used to calculate sea surface densities. These densities are than compared to faunal records of thermocline stability to evaluate the role of local climate on intermediate water formation.
The role of the tropics in the (sub)orbital forcing of climate
An ongoing debate within paleoclimatology is the origin of the high frequency climate variability first recognized in the Greenland ice-cores. Although many researchers focus on the northern Atlantic climate as being responsible for these so called Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles there is increasing evidence for a pronounced role of the tropics. A key area to study such a relation is the northern Arabian Sea. Our contribution lies in establishing high-resolution records of monsoonal climate change and correlation of these changes to global climate.

Organic matter degradation under low oxygen conditions
Sedimentary processes are strongly influenced by low bottom water oxygen conditions where the OMZ in the northern Arabian Sea impinges on the continental margin or intersects the under water topography. We studied the influence of this oxygen depletion on biota (benthic foraminifera), and early diagenesis and the degradation of organic matter.
Foraminiferal trace element incorporation
We use laser ablation ICP-MS to analyses trace elements in foraminiferal shells. The concentration of these trace element in the shells of living benthic foraminifera is calibrated to environmental conditions such as bottom water temperature and sea water nutrient concentrations. Benthic foraminifers from specific time slices covering a transect through the water column are subsequently used to reconstruct changes in oceanic circulation in the northern Arabian Sea.

Further research interests
Isotope signatures in mammal tooth
Together with the mammal paleontology group at Utrecht University I am currently involved in a project aiming at reconstructing Mediterranean continental climate since the Miocene. For this purpose we use oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions of fossil tooth of smaller and larger mammals. These data give information on diet and isotopic composition of past rainfall.

Reconstructing climate on an (intra) annual time scale using trace element records from ocean Quahog shells
This research is a joint project with the NIOZ, the Free University in Amsterdam and the ROB, within the framework of CLIVAR. We intend to use the annual growth increments of Quahog shells ("tree of the sea") for the reconstruction of climate in the North Sea and the northern Atlantic Ocean. A research grant to Rob Witbaard in 1998 made it possible to establish very high-resolution time series, stacking the growth records of individual shells.
